What is the name of your state?

Texas

Quick question,

If the judge asked you during processing if you wanted a court appointed lawyer, and you said yes, are you held to that?

Or can you hire your own lawyer?

No you are not held to that. You can hire an attorney and have the court appointed attorney removed. That is in fact exactly what the court would prefer you do.
