DUI and FTA

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA
In 1998, I recieved a DUI for a BAC of 0.11. I was visiting a family friend in NoCAL and went to the first court date and got a continuance. I was 22 yrs old and naive, i guess. The Family "friend" advised me to go back home and everything would be taken care of. I have renewed my license twice and went to do so this week, but was told by the clerk that I had a hold in CA. When I contacted CA, I was informed that I need to turn myself in, in CA. This isn't impossible, but Improbable. I have a full time job, am married with two kids and this economy has taken a toll. I understand that I am looking at lawyer fees and fines from the court. Adding a plane ticket and hotel fees are out of the question.
Is there a possiblity that this can all be done without the neccessity of my appearance? What would be accomplished if I turned myself in locally? I want to get this resolved and get on with my life. I haven't been in trouble since and I'd like to keep it that way.

It's unlikely that you will escape appearing. As you've found out, the suspended license databases are finally getting national interconnection. If you don't "improbably" resolve this, it is only a matter of time until you're arrested for driving while suspended locally and have two charges to face. Surrendering local won't do much other than causing you further grief.

Call a lawyer in the jurisdiction in California you were charged in. Hopefully he can minimize the number of appearances and time you spend in California.
