dui and insurance

What is the name of your state? North Carolina

I was charged with a dui 0.11 on the breathalizer, my question is when will my insurance company be alerted, upon conviction or upon charges? My licences was taken on site, I'm assuming the insurance company will be notified upon charge, not conviction? Please advise.

They will be notified just prior to renewal, when they order your driving records.

i phoned mine the day after my dui.. (they were gonna find out sooner or later anyway)

what they suggested is that i only keep fire and theft on my car (only 30 bucks for 6 months) until i figure out when im gonna get my license back

but the insurance broker told me that was the best thing to do in this situation because if i canceled my policy id have a hard time getting insurance after this dui crap and the rates would be even more.. i dont know how much of that is true or if she just wanted my money but the way i look at it, its only 30 bucks for 6 months so its cool.

hope that helps

You will not have a hard time getting insurance after a DUI. Insurance with any company will be expensive after that type of a ticket. Your current carrier may not insure people with DUI's, so you might not have the option of staying with them. There is no reason to remove comprehensive and/or collision, simply because you received a DUI ticket. You probably need it more now, than you needed it before.

If your vehicle is financed, you don't have a choice but to carry comprehensive and collision. If you remove the coverage, and your vehicle is stolen, then you're SOL. Just because YOU can't drive the vehicle, doesn't mean that you don't allow others to drive it.

Sometimes its better to stay with your current carrier. Other times its not.

I forgot to add a few important points, first, I was driving a company vehicle when I got the dui, when will the fleet/leasing insurance company find out about the dui charge? Second, I also got a felony drug posession charge, although i know i'll get out of that because it wasn't mine and my lawyer feels confident that'll be dropped. I don't want to alert the insurance company to the dui in fear they'll see the drug charge, in either case, I'll lose my job, but, I think i'm obligated to tell them of the charge ...any advice?

Oh, my! I would tell them before I'd let them find out on your own. However, be prepared to be escorted to the door.
