First DUI ever

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Florida

I got my first DUI ever. I was wondering if they really can take you
to jail for up to 6 months? and what can a lawyer really do for me?
because even if i have one..i'd still have to pay the fine, do community survice, alcohol classes and probation, right?
so whats the point of having one?

Last DUI ever

What the title should be.

Find out if your state has an accelerated disposition program. If not, hire a lawyer.

You may want to hire a lawyer even if they do.

Jail is not likely for a first timer, aside from the 8 hours you already spent following your arrest. It is possible, but you will most likely face fines, suspension for six months, 12 if you refused testing, Victim Impact Panel, DUI evaluation and classes. I suggest signing up for the Victim Impact Panel and classes right away, they fill quickly and you do not want this to delay anything. You will also get probation and community service. For all of the above, you report to your county's probation office to sign up. Take your checkbook.
