hardship license

What is the name of your state? california
i have a suspended license for a second dui( one in 1994 and one in 1999). the dmv told me i was not eligible for my license until i finish my dui 18 month program. i have about 8 months to go. i had my license with a ignition device installed but when the 2 years were up as ordered by the court i had it removed. then the dmv suspended my license and told me i had signed some paper saying i would keep it in my car until i finished the program. i think this was because i was kicked out of the program once. anyway, i had sold my car because i used a company car and couldnt reinstall the ignition device. needless to say i then lost my job because i couldnt drive. ive been on a leave of absence from the program because where i live there are no bus lines and i cant get to the school. now i have an opportunity to work for california edison. my neighbor works there and we can car pool. but, i need a valid license for the job because in an emergency situation i might have to drive a company vehicle. im between a rock and a hard place. i have heard of a hardship license, can this help, what can i do?

From your facts, it sounds like you may be ineligible for a hardship permit.

However, call the DMV and see if you are eligible.

Maybe a CA lawyer or Carl can get on here and explain further.

If I read this right, you are probably out of luck. We don't like repeat DUI drivers who fail to complete their programs driving around.

But, the DMV is the best source of information on this. You should arrange a meeting with someone from the DMV that can answer your questions.

never thought that they existed....do you mean a "restricted license?" I agree with Carl...."multiple offenders" that do not complete their programs are out-of-luck. The stigma of having multiple drunk drivings on your DMV record is difficult to accept, but there is an answer....continue with the program and pay your fines. William

In 1995 as a railroad engineer I received a DUI. I had to go to a 28 day intreatment center to reinstate my Drivers license. Without the DL I could not reinstate my engineers license. I was told that if I did not complete the program I wouldn't get either license reinstated. I wasn't ready for the treatment program, but went and completed it. That was the only way to get both licenses back and go to work to pay the fines, and do the probation. Best to start at the DMV and see if you have to complete the program, then see if you can't get back in one and get it completed. Good Luck.
