What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

Looking for some guidance....

I am a California resident and was arrested for Driving Under the Influence in Reno, Nevada in May, 2002. I retained an attorney in Reno at the time to assist me, and I ended up pleading no contest to the charges - my conviction date was July 31, 2002. I was required to attend a court-approved DUI School as part of the sentence, which I attended and completed via correspondence, and also completed in the required time frame. I submitted proof of completion to the Nevada court at that time along with payment of my fine.

Fast forward nearly 8 years later - I just received a "Notice of Suspension" of my California Drivers License in a letter dated November 25, 2009 from the California DMV. They are requesting I show proof of completion of a licensed DUI school/program, as well as an SR-22 from my insurance company, due to this old out-of-state DUI conviction.

I would be happy to provide them with the notice of completion - problem is, I cannot locate a copy of my proof of completion of the DUI school, as I received it so many years ago and have since moved. The DUI school company which I attended is no longer in business, either, so I would not be able to obtain a duplicate certificate of completion from them. (The SR-22 should not be a problem as I have been insured with State Farm over 15 years & should be able to get it from them.)

Can the State of California come back this many years later (7 & 1/2) and suspend my license out of the blue like this, when so long has passed since my out of state conviction? Would it be best to try to provide them with the items they are looking for, or should I try to contest it somehow and try to fight it? Would the excessive delay by the DMV be a reason for the suspension to be overturned?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! My license is crucial to my job.. (I don't even drink at all anymore - I gave it up in July of 2002 and have not had a drop since!)

Maybe you can get proof from the court that you satisfied all conditions of your conviction, including the school.

Your attorney might have retained copies of documents pertaining to your case and might still have your file. That's also worth pursuing.
