What is the name of your state? Minnesota

My son, aged 17, was pulled over for his headlights not being turned on and he was found with some marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He admitted to the officer
that he was under the influence of marijuana. We had to go pick him up
and the officer gave us a ticket with 2 things on it.
DWI - 169.20-112
Possess Drug Paraphernalia - 152.092
A court date was set for December

Naturally, I'm very upset for several reasons but I have no idea what to expect next.

Can anyone advise on what is in store for him? Do we need to get a lawyer?
We don't have much money so I'm not sure if we could afford one or not.

We probably won't qualify for a public defender. Our incomes are fairly good but we
have a lot of debt - husband hospitalized/surgery twice this year.
