Minor in Possesion of Alcohol - 2nd offense Please Help!!

What is the name of your state?What is the name of your state? California

My son received his second ticket for minor in possession of alcohol in the last twelve months. This time he was a passenger in a car that was carrying some alcoholic beverages. How serious is this offense? Should we retain legal counsel? Are we looking at some jail time? Complete suspension of driver's license? What is the most common outcome for 2nd offenders. It's pretty tough being the parent of a college student. I would appreciate any advice on the matter.
