New Jersey 1995 DUI Is Haunting Us!

What is the name of your state? Pennsylvania

(Sorry so long) Received letter from NJ demanding $5900.00 for the payment of 'auto insurance surcharge'. this is the 1st time my husband ever got this, and it states they 'just recently got an updated address for him. Here's the timeline:

1990 - moves to Town A, PA from NJ
1992 - moves to Town B, PA
1995 - receives DUI while driving in NJ: pleads guilty, pays fine; has his PA license suspended : this license clearly shows his Town B address, as do his court records.
2000 - moves to Town C, PA
7/4/2002 (aren't they dedicated, working on a holiday???) - NJ sends letter to TOWN A address stating they 'just received' that address and want this money.

They generously offer a monthly "payment plan" of $492 : that works out to 1 year to pay them.

I keep arguing that 1) it's not listed in his judgement from the DUI & therefore we're not responsible for it, 2) since they never notified us of the surcharge, and had a valid address at the time of the hearing (there's a NJ license # on the letter: waiting to see if it's his OLD NJ license) and could have easily notified hiim between 1995 & 2000 of this late bill, the most i'm willing to agree upon is paying $1000/yr for 3 years and screw them if they think i'm paying $2896.05 in ''finance charges& late fees".

If anyone has any advice to offer, i'd greatly appreciate it!!!

You might as well contact a TV station or newspaper with this.... And claim it colud be a scam......

It would make sense if you had a valid NJ license for all those years 1995-on since somone has to pay the increased insurance cost.

So when did he get his PA license back?

When did his NJ license expire? Was his NJ license suspended?

Here is a tip in dealing with the government, find a way to owe them some money like $500 and offer proof that you owe that not $5900

Such as the exact dates of the dui court date when was his NJ license suspended, he would owe for the days he had a valid NJ license.

Then see what you come up with.

N.J. DMV Called 'Organization in Crisis'

Aug 7, 2002 3:52 pm US/Eastern
(1010 WINS)-EWING, N.J. -- Calling the
Division of Motor Vehicles an "organization
in crisis", a commission appointed to fix it
has recommended a series of steps to
address security lapses and customer
service breakdowns.

They include fast-tracking New Jersey's move to a digitized driver
license that is harder to counterfeit. At the same time, driver's
license applicants will be required to show two forms of
identification, instead of only one, commission members said
Wednesday.

Customer service improvements are to include additional staffing and
performance-based contracts, the commission said. The department
may also reopen some now-closed driver testing centers.

"The department has become a symbol of government neglect,"
Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox said during a Wednesday
news conference.

Within a month, the DMV will begin to implement a comprehensive
security plan, including placing police officers and surveillance
cameras in DMV offices. DMV agents will undergo background checks
by New Jersey State Police and the FBI.

Customer service improvements should be evident within six months
to a year, the commission said.

Gov. James E. McGreevey formed the commission in February.
Members include Fox and current and former state officials.
