Question

Old DUI

I live in California and I got a DUI when I was 21 and another when I was 22. I'm now 51. I've not had a drink in over 20 years and, except for a couple of speeding tickets, I have had no trouble with the law. I am terribly ashamed of what I did and have been for the last 30 years. How can I find out if it is still on my record and if so, is it possible to have it removed?
Thank you.

It is almost certainly still on your record.

To get a copy of your criminal history you will have to get your fingerprints run by the CA DOJ:

Request Your Own Criminal Record - Background Checks - California Dept. of Justice - Office of the Attorney General

Then, see this link to the CA courts for information on expungement:

California Courts: Self-Help Center: More Topics: Criminal Law: Clean Up Your Criminal Record

Note that an expungement does not REMOVE the criminal history, it only makes it less available to the public and allows you to enter "No" if asked by a potential private employer (with some exceptions) if you have ever been convicted.

Good luck, and congratulations on the sobriety!

I'm 19 years and 3 months sober, myself.
