If that was the end of the appeal than I presume the conviction would have become final and the DMV probably should have started the suspension then. Its possible it got kicked around a while after that though. By filing the appeal it extends the appellate deadlines. Its pretty hard to guess what happened without knowing more.
In any case, your boyfriend does not need to lose his job over this. He can apply for an occupational/restricted license or he can have his attorney do the application for him. It will cost several hundred dollars and he will probably have to obtain an SR-22 which may or may not cost additional money depending on your insurance company. He will also have to take the DWI education course, but he's going to have to take that anyway to get his actual license back. But with an occupational license he can drive to and from work until the suspension is lifted.
