Underage Possession of Alcohol

What is the name of your state? Virginia

This was my first weekend at the University of Virginia and I left a party with an open container of alcohol. As I was walking down the street two University police officers pulled over and saw I had alcohol and charged me with underage possession.

How serious an offense is this and what am I looking at in terms of fines and/or license suspension and probation?

I've never been charged with an offense like this before; is there some sort of first-offenders program with which I can get this cleared from my record?
