Forcing Parents to VolunteerWhat is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MN Hello, My son (15) plays for a little league baseball team in MN. Along with the $175 fee for enrollment, the league requires each family to provide a $50 volunteer check. If a family volunteers for 2 hours, they receive their check back at the end of the season. If they don't volunteer the league cashes the check. I've told the coach I will not be providing a check. He's threatening with limited playing time for my son unless I turn over a check. Don't get me wrong, volunteering is very important, and is a great thing to do (if you have the time). I've personally coached 15 little league seasons and loved every moment. But being told that I have to volunteer or I'll be fined burns me to no end. I just don't understand how these socialist boards get away with this type of thing. I'd love to hear thoughts on how to handle this. Thanks! What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? |

| Think of it as this: The cost of baseball is really $225, with a chance to reduce it to $175 by volunteering for two hours. Don't like the program, don't sign up.

| Kiddo's football and basketball league does the same thing. We give up a check for $100 and if we do snack bar duty JUST ONCE during the season, we get the money back. If you don't like the policy, don't sign up your kid. You don't get to make the rules.

| I' mot sure why I even bothered. I expected this type of response. Does anybody understand the term, "volunteer"? Keep going along with it and you'll see your city start regulating when and where you have to "volunteer". Bunch of spineless Obama lovers! Grow a pair and demand freedom! |

Feel free to exercise your freedom by not signing your kid up for this particular team/league. If you feel that strongly about it and there is no other team/league in which your kid can play, start your own with your own requirements or lack thereof. If you can't figure that out, I don't hold out much hope for what you teach your kid about 'freedom'.

You have all the freedom in the world. Of course, your kid has no inherent right to play baseball, so no freedoms are given up if you decide not to do business with them!

| They want you to volunteer at tournaments and events (fundraisers for the school). It's just another way for the government run, public school system to milk more money out of us. Why can't you people see that? How are you okay with that? Why do you think they sell hot dogs, soda, candy, etc? Because they want you to have your sugar intake for the day? No. It's a profitable function - above and beyond the actual cost of playing baseball. They're sucking you dry - and you go along with it in the name of "volunteerism". The cost of playing baseball (uniforms, field maintenance, etc.) is $175. They know parents don't have an alternative to have their kids play baseball elsewhere, so they stick you with a ridiculous volunteer fee. Not to mention the High School team charges $365 to play and a $300 volunteer fee. $665! Are you kidding?! It's simple. They figure that you'll volunteer to make the concession stands available - where they make money to support other functions. I'm not interested in funding these other functions. If you don't volunteer, you pay the fee - making them money again. Stay PC - |

| You got that wrong. Liberals would tax everyone and no one would pay out of pocket. Your dealing with a consertive method, make everyone pay their own way.

| I'll take #4 - Rick and A.J. (short for Andrew Jackson). And I would very much like to know when Little League became a division of the public school system. |
