What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Virginia

My wife's Medical Diagnostic Sonography course is under threat of cancellation with the entire final year still pending completion. What would her recourse be, if any, in the event the course was cancelled and she is not able to complete it because of that?

She, and the other students, are waiting to hear precisely what is happening. The instructor slated to teach the remaining semesters (and the current instructor) is being cut to half-time hours and has announced she will not be returning after the current semester ends. The school hasn't identified any replacement instructors and has intimated that the course may be cancelled. The course is not scheduled to end until December 2016.

they have all invested significant time and effort into this program. It started in August last year.

Off the top, many have quit jobs, taken on child care expenses, paid tuition and other (random) school fees, purchased books, etc.

Now they are hearing that the course may not continue at the end of the current semester. Their instructor notified them that she is not returning and that they haven't found a replacement.

Is that even possible, without opening themselves up to a civil class action suit?

Thank you for any guidance you may have.

Your wife will have to wait to see what happens with the course and how the school intends to handle a cancellation, if the course is in fact cancelled. It is too early to say if there is any legal action to consider or pursue.

She should review the options to take transient coursework at other colleges if permitted. Once she has clarified it is permissible, she can find another college offering it and clarify that they will accept that course/school as meeting the standard for graduation.

I just hope this is not one of the for-profit schools under investigation by the state and the federal government.

Credits are rarely transferrable. The degrees are not always recognized as legitimate by employers. And the costs of attending tend to be far higher than the costs of attending a "regular" college or university. And these are only some of the problems students discover after enrolling.
