Hi, I'm from Potugal and I have a question regarding the law on the state of connecticut because a friend that lives there asked me. The thing I want to know is: At what age parents are no longer the ones that govern our rights and we are consider full grown ups in terms of voting and buying something like a house and leaving the country without parental permission. Here its at 18 years old but I'm not sure about there. And another thing, if someone is living there, as an immigrant with the green card, in case the age for what I asked is superior, can he or she get out of the country to Portugal, in this case, concerning that here we are in full govern of our rights at 18? Thanks

My response:
In the United States of America, in all of the 50 States, the age of majority is 18 years of age. Every person attaining that age may vote and has the absolute freedom of movement within and to go outside of this country. Under the law - - such a person is an adult with all rights and responsibilities attaching to that status. Of course, the law does not take "maturity levels" into account - - for example, there are some 18 year old's that I wouldn't trust with an automobile, or even something less - - but, under the law, they are adults.
