adultry, what do I stand to lose?

I have been trying for two years to get out of a very unhappy marriage. I was finally able to convince my husband of this recently and will be seeing a lawyer soon. Recently, I met a man. We are just friends at this point but once I am able to, we will start dating. I have made a few phone calls to this man which my husband found out about. We have a home that we own and three children. What do I really need to fear? I am getting conflicting answers. Could my spouse take my kids from me? My home? I live in VA. Morality issues aside, can one spouse "punish" another for adultry? Or do the courts take other issues as presedence?
