My wife makes $50,000 per year and she wants alimony of $1500 per month for the next 17 years. I make $150,000 and will give her the equity from the home sale ($45,000. In addition I have all the credit card bills and both college's for the kids (21 & 18). Why would I have to pay alimony?

I am a law school graduate. What I offer is mere information, not to be construed as forming an attorney client relationship. Alimony was usually set up for those women who were solely housewives and thus did not have a pay check to bring home. They usually lasted for a lifetime or until she earned a decent living or remarried. Well, I think if you pay the bulk of bills/expenses and she makes a good living, then you may want to petition the court to amend the order. Read the pertinent sections on freeadvice.com's homepage and then contact a family law attorney. Hope this helps.

Thank you Lawrat. I feel that she does make a good living and has been working for the past 10 years. With my paying all the family debt and the college expenses of two children, I hope that the courts will not award her alimony. Her lawyer wants us to settle out of court. I think his real motive is his case for alimony is very weak.
