appeal custody order

I want to appeal a custody order that has already been set by a judge via a trial. I am also representing myself in this matter and understand that an appeal is quite lengthy and expensive. How do I go about this and what do I need to base the appeal on? Any help concerning this matter is greatly appreciated. I can supply additional information as needed.
