I am/was the stepmother of 2 young boys until my husband gave up his parental rights. At the time this took place, he owed about $5,000 in back child support. The papers that he signed says that his rights are "forever severed" and he no longer must pay child support. My ??? is if he can be held responsible for the back support amount? We are in the state of Tn. Thanks..... ------------------ Science is anything you can explain to a computer.Art is everything else.(I'm starting to believe I'm an artist.

I do believe he is still responsible for the arrears..Unless the Mother agreed in the papers that it didn't have to be paid. So I would expect for your husband to have to pay it or he will be in some trouble. ------------------ *There is no love, like the unconditional love of a Mother* -I am not an Attorney, any advice given is strictly advice-

I am no lawyer, but i would think that he wouldn't be held liable anymore. He should've questioned that before he signed the papers. He may still have to pay b/c it was already in arrears but one would think that he didn't have to b/c of the fact that the ex should've had him put in jail at the same time.I'm sure you got a copy of the papers he signed. Tell him to read it again and see if it mentions the back support,if it doesn't i would definitly be on the phone in the morning asking my lawyer.

My husband just adopted my two children (ages 4 & 2). My ex-husband owes over $4,ooo in back child support. That amount will be owed until it is paid off. The child support agency will take his income tax returns every year until the amount is paid off because he never turns in the name of his employer so they can take it from his check. It does not matter that he gave the boys up for adoption. The date the judge signed the order is the date the the child support is stopped. This is in Ohio, and I don't know if TN laws are the same.
