CA moving out of school district(in state)

I have been divorced for one year, live in an exclusive, upscale neighborhood, and am finding it very hard to make it. i am supporting my 3 girls.
i have started my own business, and landed some major accounts. however, i am spending 30k a year in rent alone, and am considering a move where cost of living is cheaper. the schools are good, and the rent is inexpensive.
my ex is threatening to reverse custody, and take the kids away, because i don't have a full time job(i work out of the house to be home for my 4 year old girl.) he says that i cannot move my kids from their friends and family. (his parents)
what legal action do i have to move an hour away? do his threats have real overtones, or are they just control buttons as used in the past????? help!!!
