Current California law stipulates that child support is mandatory until age 19 or graduation from High School, whichever comes first. <there are some special circumstances for early termination such as entering military or emancipation, but you are probably not interested in that> Child support for college after 19 is voluntary and negotiable. Remember on the 18th birthday the "child" is now an "adult" and has different legal parameters. One is that child support may be directly paid to the supported person. Another is visitation (this adult may refuse it legally now). There are other weak legal "loopholes" to continue some type of child support, (such as special education or medical condition) but it definitely terminates on 25th birthday. |
