Do you WANT to send "arrears" money, or is it court ordered? I think it's great that you want to do something like that on your own! Do you have figured how much of an "arrearage" you owe?
If you are going to send ANY money to your ex-wife for an "arrearage", I would write a letter to the child support office at the county clerks office (that's where ours goes) and tell them what you are doing.
Include your address and your ex's address, and any other pertinent information. KEEP A COPY OF THE LETTER! Send your money order to them with an attachment that has your name, your ex's name, the words "CHILD SUPPORT", and your divorce case number. On your money order that you send, write the words CHILD SUPPORT. Keep all your money order receipts. And at least twice a year
go to the child support office and request a printout that shows all the money you've paid to make sure that it is being recorded appropriately. Ours costs $1 a page, but it's worth it to have the peace of mind that they ARE recording it and sending it to your ex.
Are you still paying the regular child support amount or did that stop when your child turned 18? I'm just curious.
Hope this helped, and again, I think what you are doing is commendable! Remember though, when dealing with things like this, COVER YOUR BASES! |
