Question

My son is a year and a half. I haven't seen his father since I was about 7 months pregnant nor have I talked to him since my son was about 2 weeks old. His name isn't on the birth certificate and he chooses to stay away. I have no idea where he is nor do I care. I go to school full time and still live with my parents. My father needs proof of guardianship in order for my son to remain on his insurance. Can my father and myself be the legal guardians.
How many guardians can a child have?
What exactly is a power of attorney?
We live in South Carolina.

Anyone can correct me if i'm wrong but to give your father guardianship of your child, wouldn't the father of the dad need to sign the paper also? From most that i've read on the two they are similar and i can't see how there is much difference. I do believe that if you give your father guardianship, he has custody of your son.A power of attorney can be specific on the terms that you want. I have one for my daughter to my ex husband b/c he is not her biological dad and it is a power of attorney (custody by mandate) and i'm not real sure what that part means either. Anyway, it simply states the she is residing at his house and that he has my permission to enroll her in school, get her medical attention when needed(primarily for dr. visits and for any ER visits), provide for her in a way seen fit and to discipline her in a way seen fit. I would suggest the power of attorney (and i didn't inform the bio dad b/c he is too nowhere around)b/c it seems to be easier to get out of when you want but i do believe you have to renew it every so often.Someone please correct me if i am giving the wrong statements on this.
