Divorce in Virginia

My friend lives in Virginia, has been seperated, but not legally, from his wife for 1 1/2 years and is planning to do as much of the divorce work himself. They have no children and no property to divide. Does he have to have a formal seperation agreement for 6 months, or does the time they've been seperated count? How realistic are his expectations that he can do most of this himself? He has no background in law.
