Divorcing,raised son from 10mo. to 5.5yrs old from wifes prev. marriage . confused

Been raising son most of his life from 10 months to 5.5years now.He isn't mine by birth but I have always been his dad. His genetic father pays some child support and sees him about 3 times a year for a couple hours. Now I am divorcing his mother and either won't have any custody because I'm not his real father. Or I could fight then the boy wouldn't live with any original parents. thats strange. need help.
