Here is what you do... If asked and you want to keep it, tell him no. Only if it is worth more than 2k will most people seek legal advice..
Keep the ring safe.. DO NOT SELL IT. Wait to see what he does.. if you get a letter from his attorney.. write back stating that he was the one who broke the deal and it is his fault.
If you are then served papers to appear in court.. you have three choices..
1. Call as many attorneys in your area for legel advice.. see what they have to say on the matter. If they believe you to be right, fight it..
2. Give the ring back. No costs..
3. Answer the petition and appear in court on your own. You may have to pay his legal fees though.. however I do not think he would be awarded that since it is not a clear item of law.
