ex-wife has custody - violent atmosphere

What do I do? My ex-wife has custody of my daughter. My ex-wife's boyfriend is hitting and abusing my daughter. The ex-wife has gone to the cops numerous times and has gone to a shelter. I want custody of my daughter. I have called DCYF and the school system, however no one can help me. I can't afford a lawyer and my daughter lives in another state (far away). The ex-wife used the state/free lawyer system for that state and they said that we can't use it because there would be a conflict of interest. Can anyone help? I need some advice. My daughter deserves better.
