VA Court granted joint custody to parents. Kids go the live with grandparents in AR. Father works out of state (MI) but sees them every 4-6 weeks. Mother doesn't see them for over a year, then shows up out of the blue gets kids from grandparents and takes them back to VA. At first refused to let father talk to kids over the phone. Finally allows them to communicate some. She filed to amend previous custody order and now wants full custody. Father also wants full custody. should father go ahead and file too. Is legal representation recommended or can this be handled by ones self? Lots of evidence regarding mental instability regarding mother.

What chance does a father have in custody battles? Does the fact the she did not see them for over a year have any affect?
