Legal Separation vs Divorce

I would like to know the
advantages or disadvantages in a
legal separation vs divorce. Does
either (or both) protect you from
possible tax problems when they
pertain only to the other spouse?
My husband and I have been
separated for 2 years, but nothing
legal and I feel like I need to do
something. I'm not sure what way I
should go. We both have our own
businesses and live in Florida.
There are no children involved. I
am 56 and he is 59.
