North Carolina I have two questions. My first question is,where can I obtain an actual copy of my son's birth certificate? I paid $10 at the court house to get a certified copy, but I want the actual birth certificate. Here's my next question. After my paternity results came back,my case worker at the child support office told me that we could have my son's father's name added to it. It was not on the certified copy. Would all I have to do is request his name to be added,or is there more to it,and how would I go about it? Thank you for your time.

Okay , go to the health Dept. in the county that your son was born . It will cost 10.00. It will be certified . To have his fathers name added you will have to have a court order stating that then you will have to send that to the main office ( which in N.C) i do not know where that is . But I am sure if you go to county clerk office they can guide you threw that . Good luck!!!

I'm from Louisiana and i'm sure it is the same all over but they give you a free actual copy of the birth certificate when you give birth and then you can contact the records dept. and pay for an additional one. Call the hospital where your child was born to find out where you would need to go to get another copy. Speak to someone in the records dept. in the hospital b/c they are the ones that handle the birth certificates. If i remember correctly you must know all the info as you put it on the birth certificate to begin with. When i questioned the hospital about the possibility of my husband not being present when our child was born and how i would be able to get him on the birth certificate, i was told that once he arrived we would have to go to the records dept. (which is in New Orleans) and pay for them to add his name. They never told us that he would have to have a court order or anything but we didn't have to do any paternity proof either. I would check with the hospital records as to how and where you can obtain another copy of the birth certificate.

Thanks for the info. I actually called the court house yesterday, the Vital Records Dept.,and they told me that the certified copy that I got from them (which was copied on a piece of paper) was the most I could get as far as getting my son's birth certificate. She said that I could mail $10 to Raleigh and get a fancier copy. What happend to the birth certificates with the picture of the hospital and the cute little footprints on it??! I'm going to take your advice and call the hospital and ask them. I also asked about adding my son's father's name. Unfortunately, the law in North Carolina is that if your are married at the time of your child's birth, then you can pay to have the father's name added to the birth certificate, but since my son was born out of wedlock,we have to have a court order. It's not a difficult process, just a long one. I did a follow-up yesterday, and because my son's father was born in GA,not NC,then they have to send papers to GA,and so-forth,but they are working on it. I guess it wouldn't be a good time to ask about changing my son's last name to his father's right??! I've heard that you need a lawyer and court appearences to do that. If anyone has been through that, let me know. Otherwise, thanks again for your advice and info.

[/b]

That's why i said to call the hospital b/c when i received my daughters first copy in the mail, an attached letter read that the first copy was free but any additional copies would have to be sent off for at a fee.It wasn't that much but a lil more than $10. I don't have a copy of my own birth certificate, all my mother has is a birth card that you can purchase for your child as well. I guess the people didn't know that i wasn't married at the time my daughter was born. Well, anyway, i don't know anything about changing your sons name but i would ask them before they put the father on it. Just so you can do it all at once i would ask soon. |
