Question

My child will turn 18 next year so the biological father will not be required to pay child support any longer. Is there any legal way to get him to pay some on the child's college education if it is not stated in the original divorce decree? I am still a single parent and will not be able to afford the college tuition.

I think it depends on the state laws. For instance: in PA child support ends at 18, whether the child attends college or not. Unless the parent paying support volunteers to help, there's no legal grounds for him/her to continue paying.

Again, this varies by state. Here's an article about it: http://www.smartdivorce.com/college.htm

I don't know the laws of NC, but in New York, child support can be continued while your child is in college. You should check with the family services agency in your area or with a lawyer. I have also heard of cases where a non-custodial parent was court ordered to contribute financially to the childs education.
