| I was 7 when my parents divorced and my father was court ordered to pay child support to my mother. He never payed any money and my mother never pursued the matter. I am now 20 years old and my mother still says she is not interested in collecting the back child support but that I am more than welcome to try myself to collect it. Is it possible for myself to collect the back child support? Do I have any rights since my mother is not interested? Thank you, Lisa |

You, as the child, were merely the beneficiary and, as such, you have no legal standing to directly sue. Your mother was the person to properly attempt collection procedures. But, let's assume that she did want to attempt collection - - she had two years within which to do so from your 18th birthday. Since you are now 20 years old, it's doubtful that there is any time left, and she is now forever barred from collecting. It's always a good idea to have consultation with your attorney to make a final determination.
