Problem with attorney

I have retained an attorney that has already started processing a dissolution case for me. Recently I have been getting the run around. He will not return any of my phone calls and provides no status of my case. No one in the office will tell me anything. They always say I need to talk to him, but he is never available. What recourse do I have against this man? What is the "down side" to firing him and seeking other counsel at this point? An order of publication had to be filed. If I get a new attorney now, will I have to start from scratch or can the new attorney pick up where the other one left off? Please help.
