rights about child

Here is the problem, I was never married to the father of my child. Our son is 12years old the father has never paid child support. The father lives in IL and I live in MS. It has been a ongoing process to get child support from him. In the mean time in June an July our child goes to my mothers house, which is in the same town in IL that his father lives. So his father comes and gets him from my moms house, and keeps him. I have never fought him on this because it would look bad in our son eyes. The problem is getting him to sent him home, last year he kept him out of school for a week. He knows when school starts, but always send him back after it starts. What rights do I have to go and get my son. There are no agreements between us. Can someone help me on this. please please
