What does it mean when people use the term "signing away parental rights"? Does it mean that one parent can give up all legal claims on the child(ren)? Does this include the obligation of child support if the mother and father are not married to each other?

I know if you, agree to, Allow your children to be Adopted by someone...say a step father...you "legally" give up all rights to any decisions regarding the child/ren. They effectivly becaome the property /responsibillity of the adoptor. Thus you "sign away your parental rights"...not being a lawyer it's the best example I can think of...I guess it's the same as signing away your marital rights with a devorce????

Yes, if you "sign away your parental rights", you give up rights as a parent/guardian to your child. In some cases, you can still get visitation, but it is up to the new parents/guardians. You do not have to pay child support as of the date it is legalized, but you can/may still be responsible for prior arrangements of child support. ------------------ Mrs. Buring Step-mom to Becca & Cathrin; Mom to Tj, Steven, Caitey, Maddey, & Jabe
