spousal debt responsibility in NJ

Married couple in NJ. Got separated. Wife moves into apartment, falls, fractures hip, ends up with medical malpractice suit from hip fracture. Med. mal. case settles. Wife never pays inpatient hospital bill of $12k. Estranged husband gets served as a defendant in collection lawsuit instituted by hospital. Since they were separated at the time of bill incurred, is he still on hook? Can he produce lease for her apartment as proof of separation to be dismissed from law suit? Any help would be appreciated.
