After searching for several months, I have located my birth father. He was found dead in his home in Flordia, along with his wife. Apparently, he was 78 and died of natural causes, his wife was found with traces of carbon monoxide. These deaths occurred in June 1999. There is a case still open with the local sheriff's department because there has been no family or relatives to come forward. I have discovered with certainty that this was my biological birth father. I have records to prove my case. However, I can not compare my records with any information found in the home of the deceased because the case is still open. It is a catch twenty-two. The sheriff's department wants to find the relatives, but they can not touch anything in the home. How can I prove who I am, if I can't compare my records to the records found in the home? There has been no one to come forward and claim the estate. This estate will eventually be turned over to the state of Flordia (possibly as soon as June 2001). Why would I have to hire an attorney to prove my case? This whole situation is important to me because I have just lost my adoptive father to cancer. I am looking for closure with my adoptive father and my biological father. Can anyone suggest to me a way of handling this situation? Shouldn't the state of Flordia have to prove to me that this man is not my birth father? Someone out there please give me a suggestion. Thanks in advance.
