visitation rights

i have physical custody of my 3 year old son. his father has visitation rights court ordered. he is not consistent with his order i've brougt him to court to settle this matter and he has defaulted. fustrated of having to deal with this i wrote a letter letting him know that unless he gets a new court order he will not be able to see his son due to his inconsistence. I just found out that it's illegal for me to do so and now he's gone to court and is attempting to take physical custody of my son. what should i do i can't afford a lawyer how will my contempt to the court order affect me? What are the chances of him taking custody of my son?
