What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Michigan

I received a letter in the mail yesterday (7-20-11) stating that my job had been terminated on 6-30-11 and my insurance was cancelled on 7-1-2011. Is it legal for them to terminate insurance coverage without notice? FYI I work for a school district, am not in a the union, and we are on summer break.

Thank you

Yes, what occurred was legal. It goes without saying that your insurance ends with your employment.

File for unemployment. Where you terminated for cause or just laid off? If it goes in your favor as a lay off, you should be entitled to COBRA.

Even an employee who was fired for cause is likely entitled to COBRA. COBRA applies regardless unless the reason for the termination is gross misconduct. Not just misconduct or "for cause" - it has to be GROSS misconduct for COBRA to be withheld.
