Alleged Expenses Now with Collection Agency

My wife recently had a medical procedure performed that was not covered by medical insurance. To help diffray some of the cost (so we thought) we used a third party "agency" that claimed to secure a lower price with a recommended medical provider. The agency claimed that all fees would be paid up front with the exception of a few variable fees that may be incurred based on certain conditional services. These variable fees/services were described in the contract we signed. We paid all fees owed to the agency and a few variable fees as described in the contract. After the procedure was performed the medical provider sent us a bill for an additional $2500.00 that they allege to be one of the variable fees although the medical provider's description of the associated service(s) does not fit the description provided in the contract. We have taken the position that these fees are invalid and have not paid. The medical provider has sent the fee to a CA and the total to be collected is now around $3400. Any advice on this? Thanks.

I work in the health industry, and I can tell you, these fly-by-night "cheap premium health insurance" plans are a SCAM.

They offer NO benefits at all - - - all it is is a (fake) "insurance card" saying you pay a premium.

You're truly better off being a self pay patient.
Many facilities offer a self pay discount to help the un-insured cope with medical expenses.

Ditto. This plan sounds like a SCAM - pure and simple. Our Attorney General (TX) is trying to put a stop to these types of "savings plans." You should contact your state's insurance department or attorney general and report the company. They might can get you out of the debt legally, otherwise, you owe the bill.
