change health insurance plans

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? UT

I have a question about changing health insurance plans. I was employed with a company offering health insurance which I took advantage of. I was single at the time I chose a plan but knew I would be married the following year so I verified with my HR department that I would be able to change plans when I married, they said I could. When I called to make the changes they told me I could add my husband to my existing plan but not change the insurance plan to a different one. They stated that law prohibited them from changing my insurance plan to a different one, although this is specifically what I indicated I would want to do at the time I signed up and was told I could. Is there a law that prohibits changing your health insurance plan outside of open enrollment and allows only for adding/removing people when there is a life changing event?

Look up the rules for Section 125 - with the IRS. You can add/drop members based on life changes, but those do NOT include changing plans. Do you have open enrollment coming up?

I left the job due to a few different factors. Frankly there is no love lost between myself and my former employer. I just needed to know if I was misinformed the first time I spoke with someone who said I'd be able to change plans or if the person I spoke with when I needed to make changes was wrong. I guess I have my answer, thanks.

You were misinformed by the first person you spoke with.
