cobra pre-authorization and terminated coverage

Our Cobra payments were paid automatically from our checking account Somehow, I must have canceled the automatic payment as the last one was in March. When I spoke with Cobra, they said we were terminated as of April 1 due to non-payment. My husband had a colonoscopy performed in May as well as an orthopedic office visit. Both doctors and the hospital outpatient were paid as my husband was pre-authorized for all visits, procedures. (Obviously, had the pre-authorization not been approved, he would not have had the colonoscopy) Since there were pre-authorizations, can they rescind the payments?

Yes, if you didn't pay and were canceled, they are under no obligation to pay for the procedure.

The preauthorization assumes that coverage will be in place at the time of the procedure. Under NO circumstances does any law require that your insurance pay for a procedure that takes place on a day when the coverage has already been cancelled.
