Domestic Partnership - Massachusetts

Massachusetts:

What is the current law regarding domestic partnership in Massachusetts? My girlfriend recently lost her job and the requirements of my employer to add her to my health insurance coverage as a dependent are proof of registration of domestic partnership *or*, if not required by state law, a short list of qualifications, which we qualify. I just need to know the current law in MA. and if I need to register or not.

Thanks.

That is a question you need to ask your benefits person at work. The requirements will be set by the specific policy more then the law.

if your employer does not cover domestic partners look into this:

The New Health Insurance Law. Key provisions of the law include subsidized health insurance for residents earning less than 300% of the Federal Poverty Level, and low-cost insurance for all other residents who are not eligible for insurance through their employers. As of July 1, 2007 all residents will be required to maintain health insurance.

Commonwealth Connector. Despite the vague name, this is the state agency managing mandatory health insurance. The two basic programs are Commonwealth Care, for lower income residents, and Commonwealth Choice, which will offer private sector alternatives for those who don't qualify for low-income insurance. 1-877-MA-ENROLL (1-877-623-6765)

The question is not whether they cover domestic partners - they do. The question is whether they have to officially register as DP for her to qualify.
