Dunned for Prescription Payment

What is the name of your state? GA
I was insured through my former employer and also paid for family coverage. My employee manual stated that coverage will be paid through the end of the month when an employee terminates and does not address family coverage. I terminated after the first of the month and filled several prescriptions in the three weeks after I left and before coverage started through my new employer. Now the insurance company is dunning me, claiming that my coverage lapsed at the beginning of the month, one week before I terminated, and the prescriptions were paid in error. Apparently, either my employer dropped my coverage prematurely or the insurance company is mistaken about when the coverage lapsed. How should I handle this? I don't want the insurance company to report it on my credit record, but I don't think I should have to pay for the prescriptions either. Should I call the insurance commissioner, reimburse the paid prescriptions, or pursue some other course of action?
