Employer cancelled insurance. did not inform.

What is the name of your state? TX

am also having some trouble with my ex employer. I worked there from Jan 2005 till September 2006. During this period I had health insurance from them for myself and my family. They cancelled our insurance for 2 months. Date that they cancelled was May 1st 2006. I was still employed with them. They did not give any notice and did not send any letter regarding Cobra. My wife delivered a baby boy on May 3rd 2006. Although, the ex-employer started our insurance back on July 15th with some other insurance company, but that does not help with our bills during the period starting from May1st 2006 - July 14th 2006. Also, the employer never any formal notice regarding the insurance cancellation or did not send any Cobra information. For some reason they had stopped paying premium to insurance company which resulted in this cancellation.
Now I have $25000, that I am owing to hospital, insurance company and several different medical facilities for that period. I have been getting calls from them and our fear is that our credit would also get affected. I tried contacting the ex employer, but initially they said they would take care of the issue, but later they completely stopped responding to my emails or taking up my calls. Their intention does not seem to be right. I have all the bills and emails.
What should I do here? I owe the above mentioned amount for no fault of mine and I can not afford to pay such a huge amount. Is law in my favor?
Your answer is highly appreciated...
Thanks,
Alok

During the period where there was no coverage, did he continue to take premium payment from your paycheck?
