Group Insurance cancelled right before surgery!

I am scheduled for surgery on Sept 1st. It has already been preapproved by the insurance company which is group health insurance with my job. They just told us today that we will we cancelling that insurance as of Thursday and beginning with a short term coverage policy for 45 days then switching to another health insurance. I guess what I'm wondering is if the old insurance company is legally responsible for covering my surgery since it was already approved or will I have to go through the entire process again and possibly cancel the surgery date? The old insurance company actually cancelled the policy early because they found out the company was not renewing come the fiscal year. So I'm assuming it is their responsibility. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

No, the old insurance carrier has no responsibility for any services provided after the cancellation date, regardless of whether they had been pre-approved or not. The insurance carrier that is in force on the day of the surgery is the one who will be responsible for payments, so if that carrier requires pre-approval you will have to go through the process again.
