Help With Brother's Hospital Bill

Hi,

My brother recently was admitted to ER and then ICU and finally needed to have surgery for an ulcer in his intestine and massive bleeding. His medicaid did not become effective to the following Monday. The doctors told us that it was an emergency surgery and would be covered. The lady in the accounts department also said that we should be able to apply for emergency medicaid.

Since then she has requested information such as our tax forms, deed to the house, business info (since my parents own a small business), bank statements for both their personal account and their business account. She said that she needs all this information to help reduce the cost if possible. The bill comes out to $24,000 and it sounds like the emergency medicaid has been denied. Should I give her all information that she has requested?

Also my brother is 20. Is he legally responsible for the bills or are my parents responsible.

Anyone who advises you that something is covered is not guaranteeing coverage. Doctors do not know the insurance details and it sounds like the account reps said he could apply for emergency mcaid (true), not that they're guaranteeing coverage. Just mentioning this because some people don't realize this.

Your brother would be responsible for the bill unless he's disabled or if your parents agreed to pay.

A financial counselor normally does do financial checks to determine eligibility for grants and discounts. What is strange is she's asking your parents for this when your brother is an independent adult (that's my assumption). Did you ask why? Perhaps she's under the impression they're willing to pay the bill. If they're not, then they need not provide any info and your brother will be held solely responsible for payment.

NY has no statute with respect to emancipation. This issue is decided on by a individual case basis; emancipation can take place before 21, if appropriate court so decides.
