HELP: Enmergency bill unpaid

What is the name of your state? Florida

I'm an international student. Last Dec, I went to the Hospital Emergency Room for eye infection treatment. Right after that, I made a claim to my insurance company for the doctor billls. My insurance company declined my claim because of the lack of student identification. (It is ridiculous...) I prepared the document and sent a request of claim review, but my claim is still in processing till now, more than half a year... In the meantime, the agent which collects doctor bills keeps sending me bill notice. The final notice I just received said my account "will be placed for immediate collection". My credit will be affected.

Actually, I'm in U.S. just for one year. I really have no idea what should I do. Shall I pay the bill? It's too expensive for me...Or shall I just wait for my insurance company? What's the negative affection if my account is transfered to an immediate collection?

Thanks!

You should make payment arrangements. Even with insurance, you would have stil owed money.

Thanks for your suggestion. My concern is that if I make the payment myself, will that give the insurance company an excuse to extend my claim forever?

Should Pay the bill unless

I believe you should pay the bill if you want your credit in good standing, this is the number one reason for bankruptcy filings in America today they say. I have said in previously posting what I would really do.

I know this is a little bit old, but, if you are able to, you should pay the bill and submit a member's claim to your insurance company along w/ a receipt showing that you paid the bill. They will reimburse you unless the hospital is contracted with them. Keep in mind- balance due statements will not work if you want to be reimbursed. You must submit your proof of payment.
If the hospital is contracted w/ them, they can only submit your portion of the bill to the collection agency. They know what their contract rates are, and based upon your insurance policy, can figure out your portion.
You should at the very least make payment arrangements and start paying on your portion of the bill.

*oh--note on student verification-they request student verification to make sure that you are covered by the policy in effect. Most companies will not cover dependents over 19 years of age unless they are full time students.

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to PM me. This is what I do for a living (work for an insurance company, sorting through the crap that computers and humans make of claims that should or should not be paid).

Thanks and good luck.
