Maternity Benefits not Available

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? TX

Hello,

I am self imployed, and my wife and I are lucky enough for her to be able to stay at home and take care of our first child. We are trying to have a second child, but found out our insurance carrier no longer offer a maternity benefits rider, and they do not offer a supplimental insurance product. We are not young, and don't want to wait the year+ to change insurance companies if possible.

Our plan does cover "Complications of Pregnancy" and "Newborn Sick", but nothing else, so my understanding is we would have to pay for pre-natal visits and hospital costs related to a normal birth.

The Health Insurance Carrier defines the terms above as :

Quote:
Complications of pregnancy means conditions with diagnoses which are distinct from pregnancy, but adversely affected by pregnancy or caused by pregnancy. Such conditions include, but are not limited to:
• Acute nephritis;
• Nephrosis;
• Cardiac decompensation;
• Hyperemesis gravidarum;
• Puerperal infection;
• Pre-eclampsia (toxemia);
• Eclampsia;
• Abruptio placenta;
• Placenta previa;
• Missed or threatened abortion;
• Ectopic pregnancy;
• Endometritis;
• Hydatiform mole;
• Chorionic carcinoma;
• Pre-term labor;
• Non-elective cesarean section;
Complication of pregnancy does not mean:
• False labor;
• Occasional spotting;
• Rest prescribed during the period of pregnancy;
• Conditions associated with the management of a difficult pregnancy, but
which do not constitute distinct complication of pregnancy; or
• Elective cesarean section.
• Spontaneous termination of pregnancy which occurs during a period of
gestation in which a viable birth is not possible; or
• Gestational diabetes

"Newborn Sick" covers anything that would
fall outside of the realm of a normal, healthy newborn care. So anything
that would go above and/or beyond the care a healthy newborn would require
could be considered "Newborn Sick" though, of course, this falls on how the
attending doctors mark any claims filled to {insurancecompany}.
Questions :

1) Is there maternity only-based insurance policies? This is probably a stupid question, because what company is going to give you insurance when there are guaranteed costs/claims probably over $10,000.
2) I am struggling to determine what is NOT covered, and get a sense of what my risk is of putting my family in the poor house.
3) How much does a normal birth cost if I pay for it out of my own pocket?
4) What are the other factors I don't even know about that are going to destitute my family?

Thanks for any advice or links to reference material in advance!What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

If you want to know what pregnancy and childbirth will cost, you need to call up the doctor and hospital you will be using and ask them.
