Need continued insurance after Cobra but my daughter has a conditionWhat is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Alabama My question is- does BCBS have to continue our coverage if we request it?We are currently on Cobra insurance through BCBS of Texas. My husbands last employer's main office is in Texas. We lived in Colorado working there for this company then they moved us to Alabama but we always had BCBS of Texas. My daughter started College in Colorado and remains there as our dependent. We are in the last months of our affordable Cobra plan and do not have company benefits from another company. My husband and I could get coverage but my daughter has lupus. Is it possile to get insurance? We have been turned down for an individual policy with her on it from BCBS of AL. Is there any company out there that will? ![]() Last edited by Bamalama; 09-03-2009 at 05:35 PM. |

| Have you tried applying for a Cobra extension?

| COBRA extensions are only mandated in limited circumstances. Unless this is one of them (there would have to have been EITHER a second qualifying event during the first term of COBRA OR your daughter would have to have qualified for SSDI during the first 60 days of the COBRA), any extension would be on the good will of the employer; they would not be legally obligated to extend it, and if you have heavy claims they likely would not. To the best of my knowledge, BCBS is not obligated to provide coverage. There are only two states, MA and ME, which are guaranteed issue states. In all other states, an insurace carrier may legally decline to provide an individual policy (they cannot decline coverage on a group policy). I'm sure some company will provide coverage but you may have to do some searching. To this end, I would recommend that you use an insurance broker. They are more likely to be aware of which companies are likely to have affordable coverage and can act as your advocate in obtaining it. Good luck. |

| thank you-we could stay on cobra- don't need extension but after the 65% relief from Obama ends we have to pay $1,700.00 a month for our coverage and that just isn't possible. We pay $685.00 a month now. I will try an insurance broker. May have to go to work out of my field just to get insurance. Looks like it. |
